General Description
The Bit Boot Basket is a simple but effective and economical tool. It is normally run above the bit to catch and retain objects too heavy to circulate out of the hole. This Bit Boot Basket has been proven effective in thousands of jobs and over a period of many years.
Use of these baskets does not interfere with usual operation in any way and full circulation may be maintained through them. They are available in all drill pipe sizes.
Use
The Bit Boot Basket is used in drilling, milling, and scraping operations; any operation which produces millings, cuttings, or settlings too heavy to be circulated completely out of the hole.
Construction
The Bit Boot Basket is composed of a Mandrel, Boot, and Boot Stabilizers. The Mandrel is machined from selected alloy steel. The Boot Basket is composed of two parts, the mandrel and boot. The mandrel has stabilizers welded on it. The boot is a sleeve that fits over the mandrel. Some boots are screwed onto the mandrel and others are welded.
Operation
They are run immediately above the bit to catch small particles of junk that has broken up or that has fallen into the hole. Please note that it is customary to run two baskets at one time.
When the pump is shut down and the heavy particles of junk fall back to the bottom, some of them are trapped in the baskets each time.
Some consideration should be given to what size to run and when to run them. You should not run one so large that junk cannot get up by it. Also if you run a basket that has a skirt larger than the drill collars, you should caution the driller about pulling it in the bottom of the casing.
