General Description
The Series 70 Bowen Overshot is an external catch tool. It is a short catch overshot. It differs form the Series 150 in several ways.
When fishing in tubing, casing, or open hole for a very short length of fish, the Bowen Series 70 Short Catch Overshot can be successfully used where no other overshot available will do the job.
Use
As indicated, the Series 70 Short Catch Overshot is specifically designed to engage the exposed portion of a fish whose length is too short to be caught with any other type of overshot.
Construction
It is made up of two basic parts, the bowl and the top sub. The grapple is put in from the top and the control is placed on top of the grapple. This permits the grapple to be in the very bottom of the overshot; therefore, giving it the ability to catch a very short fish. There are no packoffs for the Series 70. Basket grapples are the only grapples available for it, and all controls are the same regardless of the size of the grapple. There are top extensions available. There are not guides or extensions on the bottom.
Operation
The operation of catching a fish and releasing the overshot are basically the same as a Series 150 Overshot. Another concept of Operation may be as such, assemble the tool as follows: 1) Select the correct size Grapple. Install it in the Bowl, using left-hand rotation from the upper end. 2) Drop the Basket Grapple Control into the Bowl with the Control Finger inserted into the slotted portion of the Grapple. 3) Screw the Top Sub into the upper end of the Bowl, making it up wrench tight.
Connect the Overshot to the running string and run it into the hole. Maintain all the circulation desired.
To engage and pull the fish:
As the fish depth is approached, rotate slowly to the right while slowly lowering the Overshot over the fish. Combined lowering and rotation is important. After engagement, elevate the fishing string to pull the fish.
To release from the fish:
If it is not possible to pull the fish, bump down, then simultaneously rotate slowly to the right while slowly elevating the fishing string until the Overshot is clear of the fish. Combined elevation and rotation is important.
The operator will note that left-hand rotation is never required to engage or release from the fish.
